The entire process – from sending our initial proposal to the publication of our book – has been a pleasure. Every step has been handled professionally, the cooperation has been outstanding, and we have clearly felt how dedicated people working at HUP are.

We are open for submissions by academics globally. HUP’s editorial team evaluates all book proposals that are submitted to the press. The final publishing decisions at HUP are made by our international academic board consisting of prominent researchers. See more on HUP’s peer-review policies here.
The Press offers researchers support and services to make sure that publishing your work in Open Access is smooth, professional, and of high quality. Our services include copyediting by native speakers, indexing by professional indexers, and an experienced publishing professional at HUP to guide you through the publication process. For more information on our services, see our pdf flyer here.
If you are interested in publishing with us, please download our Book proposal form, fill in the form carefully, and submit the proposal along with sample text/abstracts/chapters to Anna Vesterinen (anna-mari.vesterinen@helsinki.fi). You can also contact Anna for any advice. If you wish to submit a full manuscript, please fill in the book proposal form and send it along with two copies of the manuscript: the first file should include all author details, and the second file should be anonymised (see instructions here). Please note that both versions have to include a table of contents.
Helsinki University Press focuses on publishing research literature with new and original ideas. We publish monographs, multigraphs, edited volumes, book series, and journals. Jubilee books, commemorative publications, conference proceedings, or PhD dissertations are not considered. We welcome manuscripts of edited volumes with foci on topic, content, and coherency despite a loose connection to a conference. Additionally, we welcome monographs further developed from high-quality PhD dissertations. Currently, the Press does not publish course books or textbooks, however, works that also serve larger academic readerships can be considered.
We find OA very relevant, since we wish to reach decision-makers and various professionals in education, training, guidance and youth services (in other words not only academics). During the process, we particularly appreciated the close professional contacts with HUP.
- Kristiina Brunila and Lisbeth Lundahl, editors of
Youth on the Move: Tendencies and Tensions in Youth Policies and Practices
HUP evaluates manuscripts solely on the basis of their academic merit, and we welcome submissions by academics globally. Manuscripts recommended for publication by peer reviewers and the Press’s academic board may be published without book processing charges.
If the author/project has funding for publishing/open-access publishing, HUP requests a fee of €6,500–€8,500 to cover publication costs, depending on the length of the volume (see below). This way the Press and its authors support developing sustainable financial models for open access publishing.
- €6,500 for manuscripts with 60,000 words or less
- €7,500 for manuscripts with 60,000–120,000 words
- €8,500 for manuscripts with 120,000–150,000 words
Helsinki University Press’s books are compliant with research funders’, such as UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), policies regarding open access for long-form publications.
If you are interested in publishing a book series via HUP, please contact anna-mari.vesterinen@helsinki.fi for book series’ proposal form and further information regarding the process.
If you wish to submit your proposal/manuscript to one of the current book series, please download the series’ proposal form below:

HUP focuses in publishing already established journals, and we do not currently set up new journals. For existing journals, HUP develops and maintains a dedicated website, which enables authors to submit articles online. Additionally, we provide an infrastructure to transform the journals’ issue archive to a fully electronic and open platform at a low cost. Please note that for journals, some institutional funding is required to make sure the sustainability of the journal, as well as to guarantee that no Article Processing Fees are collected from individual authors.
If you would like to submit us a journal proposal, please download our journal proposal form and send it to anna-mari.vesterinen@helsinki.fi
If deemed suitable for HUP’s publishing portfolio by the editorial team and the academic board, the journal proposal will be sent for external peer review to at least two experts selected by HUP. Finally, the proposal will be evaluated by the academic board on the basis of peer-review reports. For further info on our peer-review policies, see here.
