    Call for Proposals

Helsinki University Press (HUP) is seeking proposals for original research, across multiple disciplines, on the cultural, economic, social, and political dimensions of pandemics. We welcome proposals for monographs, short monographs, and edited volumes. Submissions will be evaluated on a rolling base and proposals are welcome at any point up until 31 January 2023 (at 23:59 EEST).

    Background

Pandemics are human, social, and economic crises that have affected dynamics both within and between civilisations in diverse ways. HUP is soliciting book proposals from researchers studying the impact of pandemics from multiple disciplinary perspectives. We are open to all methodological and epistemological approaches, and welcome research proposals that promote better understanding of historical and/or present pandemics. Research topics may include (but are not limited to) the implications of pandemics for the following issues:

    Submission and selection process

Proposals should be submitted using the PDF proposal form that can be downloaded here. One sample chapter or sample abstracts can be provided as a separate Word or PDF document. Contact Managing Editor Anna-Mari Vesterinen (anna-mari.vesterinen@helsinki.fi) in case you wish to submit a proposal or if you need any assistance with the process. Finalised proposals and any accompanying material should also be sent to Anna-Mari.

We welcome proposals from academic researchers, both early-career and established scholars, irrespective of their affiliations. We are keen to encourage applications from researchers in the Global South. We accept proposals and manuscripts written in English. In the event of a surplus of strong proposals, preference will be given to monographs over edited volumes. Dissertations and conference proceedings will not be considered.

All proposals are first evaluated by HUP’s editorial team and Academic Board. Selected proposals and manuscripts undergo a rigorous peer-review process prior to a publishing decision. Accepted manuscripts will be published digitally in open access with the possibility to buy paperbacks as print on demand. The authors are free to choose under which Creative Commons license they prefer to publish their work. No author fees will be charged for manuscripts published through this call.
